Some of the most sought after holiday gifts also often come with some pretty hefty price tags. While you can certainly save some cash by buying used items on sites like Craigslist or OfferUp, not everyone wants to give used gifts, and if there are any issues with your purchase, you may be left with little recourse. You can protect yourself a bit more by buying from sites that offer certain buyer guarantees such as eBay or Amazon, but they only guarantee that the item will arrive in the specified condition, not that it will still work several weeks down the road.
Thankfully, there is still a way to save some cash and get some guarantees at the same time. Refurbished products have been carefully inspected by the original manufacturer or an authorized retailer. Not only are they guaranteed to be in a certain condition when you purchase them, but many refurbished products will also come with the same warranty that a new product does. In many cases, a refurbished item may simply be one that had nothing wrong with it but was opened and then returned. Once a package has been opened, it has to be carefully inspected by the retailer or manufacturer before it can be sold again, but it can no longer be sold as new. In other cases, it may just have a small cosmetic blemish such as a nick or a scratch in a case or housing. Invariably, however, refurbished products almost always have only minor issues or cosmetic blemishes, or it is not worth it to the retailer to even try and resell them.
Apple, for instance, offers refurbished products directly on their site that offers the same one-year warranty that all of their new products do. In most cases, refurbished Apple products will even come with the same original packaging that all of their new products do, and they also include all the same cables, cords, or other accessories that their new products come with. Not all retailers or manufacturers will include original packaging with their refurbished products, but you can still make a gift-giving splash without it. As the old saying goes, presentation is everything, and there are a number of ways to gift a refurbished product that makes it stand out even without original packaging.
